Clients often ask what a healthy relationship is supposed to feel like, especially after leaving one that was not. These twelve qualities are a working reference — not a scorecard.
1. Safety — physical and emotional. 2. Trust that is earned and maintained. 3. Honesty, including about difficult things. 4. Respect for boundaries, stated and unstated.
5. Genuine curiosity about the other person’s inner world. 6. Repair after conflict, not just avoidance of conflict. 7. Shared responsibility for the relationship’s upkeep. 8. Independence — separate friendships, interests, and inner lives.
9. Reliability, so that words and actions match. 10. Appreciation expressed out loud. 11. Fair fighting, without contempt or scorekeeping. 12. Room to change, because both people will.
If several of these feel unfamiliar, that is information — not a verdict. Relational patterns learned in unsafe environments can be unlearned, and therapy is one place to practice.
